Most of the structures say buildings are actually designed for gravity loads. These structures can also resist dynamic loads say earth quake and wind loads due to its inherent strength. Even the structure is designed as an under reinforced structure there is a chance of brittle failure when the building is subjected to excessive dynamic loading. If the building have low seismic strength then that building experiences huge displacements which leads to failure of major structural elements say columns, beams and slabs which gives way to property and human loss which is not acceptable. So seismic strengthening of buildings in high seismic zones is much needed to avoid property and human loss. Various retrofitting techniques are available to strengthen the existing seismic deficient structures.
